Google Tech Talk December 5, 2011 A Chinese Typewriter in Silicon Valley: What 150 Years of Chinese Information Technology can Teach the Alphabetic World Presented by Thomas S. Mullaney. ABSTRACT In 1862, an eccentric Frenchman published two essays about telegraphy: the first, a proposal for a Chinese telegraph code, and the second, a critique of Morse Code. Inspired by his study of Chinese, he argued that symbolic languages like Morse and other telegraph codes failed to measure up to the...

A hugely challenging case of designing a machine capable of reproducing a written language that lacks an alphabet yet possesses over 40,000 characters. This is a real life example of a design problem that Arnold regarded as well suited to the creative approach to problem solving.

A survey of rice agriculture, past and present, in Burma with an eye on enhancing its productivity and the varied challenges that must be faced in doing so. It is illustrative of the kind of problem where creative problem solving might be most appropriate.

This is an example of a more general problem category for which there is no one correct answer but rather a whole spectrum of possible correct answers. It concerns a science-fictional low-gravity mining project on the dwarf planet, Ceres, that encourages a creative approach to problem solving.

This is the third and last of three cases by John E. Arnold employing a science fiction motif which challenged his design students to apply a creative thinking process to solving important problems that faced mankind. In this instance a limited nuclear exchange between the Soviet Union and the United States across the Bering Strait created a new element, zylerium, which produced incurable blindness in humans. The world had at most two generations to prepare for global human blindness.

An intriguing historical film, demonstrating many expensive business machines found in modern offices of the era, including electromatic and Chinese typewriters and machines for filming, stenciling, folding and lithographing. Among the machines shown are Diebold's Flofilm microfiche recorder, the Fileomatic Desk, the Pierce Electronic Wire Recorder, the Soundscriber with plastic disk, the Elliott Stencil Machine with Graphotype machine, the Davidson Duplicator for litho printing, the Davidson...
